A 60-day voyage around the Land Down Under has been cancelled in the wake of the death of an older woman who was left behind by the ship on a remote island.

The passenger had been walking on Lizard Island with shipmates from the vessel, but separated from the excursion for a rest. The liner left without her and came back after some time after the crew realised the passenger was missing.

A major rescue mission found her body the following day.

Authorities are investigating the incident, alongside law enforcement and the official investigator.

Head of the shipping company stated that passengers and crew on the Coral Adventurer were told that the continuation of the voyage had been called off due to the "sad loss and prior mechanical issues".

In a statement, he mentioned that passengers would be issued a total repayment, and said the organization was working "to arrange the return journeys of the individuals via private aircraft".

Authorities also issued an updated announcement, and said they had "provided a directive to the Captain" preventing any additional guests from boarding the liner.

The official said that they would inspect the ship in Cairns upon its arrival.

Timeline of Events

The liner first departed the coastal city on October 24th, and was merely two days into the voyage at the point of the 80-year-old's passing. The remote island was the opening port on the journey.

Travelers on board - who typically pay tens of thousands of money to join the expedition - were ferried there for a shore visit with the possibility of hiking or underwater exploration.

Family Reaction

The offspring of the elderly passenger said that her relatives was "shocked and grieved that the vessel left Lizard Island after an scheduled tour without my mum".

Through her comments, she portrayed her mother as an "vigorous 80-year-old" who was a member of a walking organization.

"According to scant information we have been informed, it seems that there was a failure of responsibility and ordinary reasoning," she said.

She further stated that she wished the inquiry would be able to identify what "the operator should have performed that might have protected Mum's existence".

"We understand from the authorities that it was a extremely warm period, and mother became unwell on the mountain ascent," she stated.

"They requested her to head down, alone. Then the vessel departed, apparently without doing a roll call.

"At some stage in that chain of events, or shortly after, mum passed away, alone."

Operator Reaction

Through an announcement, the CEO affirmed that the operator was "collaborating extensively with officials to support their examination".

He stated that the organization was "deeply sorry that this has transpired" and had extended its total backing to the relatives.

Cruise Industry Practices

The vessel accommodates up to a hundred twenty passengers with 46 personnel, according to corporate information. It was specially constructed to access isolated areas of Australia's shoreline and is outfitted with "tenders" - minor craft used to ferry passengers on shore trips.

Incidents of this nature are rare, and cruise ships have systems to document which travelers are getting on or disembarking, according to travel authorities.

"Leaving covertly or [back] on the ship simply isn't an option," a specialist commented.

Cruise lines regard these procedures extremely carefully and have "sophisticated systems in place to prevent such occurrences from occurring," the authority continued.
